27th February, 2025
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) inducted 15 qualified medical doctors from Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, into the medical profession on Thursday. The event, which took place at the university campus, was part of the second segment of the 19th Induction and Oath-taking ceremony for the institution’s medical graduates.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ralph Adeghe announced that with the latest inductees, the total number of doctors from the 2023/2024 cohort has reached 66. He noted that 51 medical graduates had previously been inducted by MDCN in October 2024 during the first segment of the ceremony.
Prof. Ezemonye emphasized the importance of professionalism, stating that it is crucial for every disciplined vocation. He remarked, “Dealing with patients in various conditions can take a toll on the emotional and mental health of new medical professionals,” encouraging the inductees to develop resilience and coping strategies to navigate these challenges. He highlighted the need for increased support, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to facilitate a smoother transition into their new roles.
The Vice Chancellor expressed pride in the university’s contribution to the journey of the new doctors, having equipped them with the essential knowledge, skills, and values necessary for medical practice. He urged the inductees to carry forward this legacy, becoming advocates of change and torchbearers for a brighter future in healthcare within the nation.
Administering the Hippocratic Oath, Dr. Fatima Kyari, the Registral and Chief Executive Officer of MDCN, emphasized the importance of adhering to the code of conduct for medical practitioners. Represented by the Deputy Registral, Dr. Enejo Abdu, she warned the inductees against breaching their oath by disclosing patients’ medical information to the public and outlined the strict sanctions for any violations of the guidelines, irrespective of location.
The guest speaker, Prof. Moses Momoh, delivered a lecture titled “Medicine as a Vocation.” He conveyed that the practice of medicine is more of a vocation than a profession and urged the new doctors to see their induction as a divine mandate. As the Medical Director of CITI Surgeons, Prof. Momoh stated that their success would be measured by their impact on patients, colleagues, trainees, and the community.
Concluding his address, he advised the doctors to foster passion and kindness towards their patients, stating, “Beyond the call of your duty, you must be kind and nice to your patients. Take the practice of medicine as more of a vocation than a profession.”
