Igbinedion University Okada, Nigeria’s premier private university, recently held its 21st convocation ceremony, conferring honorary degrees on distinguished individuals, including former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, and retired Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Joe Itsebaga Acha. The event was graced by notable personalities, including Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who delivered a thought-provoking convocation lecture.

In his lecture titled “Public and Private Sector Intervention in Tertiary Education in Nigeria: Stimulus for Innovative Research and Development,” Senator George Akume emphasised the crucial role of tertiary education in driving economic growth and societal development. He acknowledged the challenges faced by higher education in Nigeria, ranging from effectiveness to funding, and stressed the need for both public and private sector interventions to address these issues.

The convocation ceremony was declared open by the Founder and Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada, Sir Chief Doctor Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion. The honourable chancellor commended the 2023 graduates for their well-rounded training, enabling them to compete globally.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, highlighted the university’s achievements during the academic session and announced plans for expansion into other education regions to enhance its internationalisation strategy.

The Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah, noted that the university not only produces skilled professionals for Nigeria’s various sectors but also serves as a benchmark for global competitiveness through the dissemination of knowledge and innovation.

The recipients of honorary degrees and higher degrees expressed their gratitude for the recognition bestowed upon them. A special moment during the ceremony was the presentation of the status of Queen Idia to the guest lecturer, Senator George Akume, by the Deputy Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Chief Dr. Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, a two-term governor of Edo State.

Prominent figures in attendance included the Emir of Biu, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Mai Mustapha Umar, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5 headquarters in Benin City, AIG Arungwa Nwazue Udo, Engineer Elvis Obaseki, and Managing Director of Independent Television and Radio, among other dignitaries who graced the occasion.
