Igbinedion University Hosts Stakeholders’ Meeting on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax
Igbinedion University, Okada, hosted a one-day stakeholders’ lecture series organized by the institution’s Dora Akunyili College of Pharmacy regarding the implementation of the National Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax in Nigeria. The meeting, held at the university’s main library conference hall on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, brought together experts from the health, finance, and commerce sectors to discuss the implications of the tax on public health.
The Commissioner for Health in Imo State, Dr. Bartholomew Okorochukwu, delivered a keynote address at the event, emphasizing the need for a higher tax on sugar-sweetened beverages to reduce consumption and mitigate the rising cases of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Nigeria. Dr. Okorochukwu commended Igbinedion University for its commitment to promoting public health and well-being, citing the university’s cutting-edge research and community outreach programs.
The Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, welcomed participants to the event, highlighting the university’s role in promoting evidence-based policy decisions. “Igbinedion University is committed to providing a platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions on critical public health issues,” Prof. Ezemonye stated.
The lecture series was attended by representatives from the Imo State Ministries of Health, Finance, and Commerce, as well as stakeholders from the private sector and civil society organizations. Igbinedion University’s College of Health Sciences, which offers programs in medicine, nursing, and other health-related disciplines, played a key role in organizing the meeting.
The university’s commitment to promoting public health and well-being is reflected in its research and community outreach programs, which focus on addressing the health needs of vulnerable populations in Nigeria.
