Igbinedion University, FG parley on ways to improve standards in the Pharmacy Pr
The need for improvement in standards in the practice of the pharmacy profession was the center of discussions at the Dora Akunyili College of Pharmacy Lecture at Igbinedion University, Okada which held on Thursday.
Speaking on the need to improve standards and what the federal government is doing in that direction, the Guest Speaker and Director-General/Chief Executive of Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mallam Farouk Salim said the federal government has been supporting industry with relevant standards, information on international best practices aimed at overcoming Technical Barriers to Trades (TBTs) and working with the relevant regulatory sister agencies such as NAFDAC and PCN to ensure that the pharmacy profession is optimally positioned to effectively carry out its duties to the people of our country.
The SON D.G and Chief Executive who hailed Igbinedion University’s College of Pharmacy for the choice of the theme of the day’s Lecture which is “The Impact of Standards on the Practice of the Pharmacy Profession”, insisted that Standards are critical to the survival of the civilised society such as ours.
The Standard Organisation of Nigeria Chief Executive also lauded the cosmopolitan nature of the university which is quite visible in the naming of the various colleges including that of Pharmacy which was named after Professor Dora Akunyili, a one time Director General of NAFDAC.
Earlier in his address, the chairman of the occasion and Vice Chancellor, Igbinedion University Okada, Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye said the College of Pharmacy have a good story of success to tell since it’s inception almost 20years ago. “ over the years, Dora Akunyili College of Pharmacy has demonstrated an enviable reputation for producing pharmacy graduates with great prospects of practicing in other fields such as academia, hospital, industries, administration, research and in other fields of human endeavors. It is important to note that since inception of the college in 2004/2005 session, we have produced over 1200 pharmacy graduates.”
The Vice Chancellor represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Raphael I. Adeghe also joyfully informed the gathering that the National Universities Commission ( NUC) has approved the commencement of Doctor of pharmacy programme in the 2022/2023 session.
