    CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME

    TEXT:EPHESIANS 6:1-4

    Ephesians 6:1-4

[1]Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

[2]Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

[3]That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

[4]And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

KEY VERSE: “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise)” (EPHESIANS 6:2).

At the time Apostle Paul wrote his circular epistle to the brethren in Ephesus, he was a prisoner in Rome. Under house arrest, he did not allow bitterness or distractions deter him from continuing to do the Lord’s work. This particular epistle reflected the chief characteristics expected of a stout believer going through adversity. Paul was loving and focused, determined to teach that there must be love and healthy relationships in a Christian home.

Paul says in our text that our faith in Jesus must prove itself first at home. Everyone has a responsibility to each other. The children must obey their parents in the Lord, and in the flesh, even if they appear to be demanding. Paul takes the children to God’s promise that He would honour such with long life. The elders are required not to provoke their children to wrath.

A Christ-honouring home is an invaluable asset to the society because as the family members leave for their respective secular tasks, they exhibit Christian virtues needed to stand the community on the formidable pillars of righteousness. Such a structure, “founded upon a rock,” is built to resist end-time rebellion against godliness.

The tragic condition of man, exemplified by the general breakdown of spiritual values among youths leading to disturbing levels of criminality, is the result of failed homes. The Church, thus, must rise to the occasion by restoring hope to mankind through making our homes mirrors of righteousness.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Society will be at peace if Christ is allowed to rule its homes.

    MEDITATION

    The dos in godly family

    Reflections

    1. Natural family

    a. Reflect on your expected responsibilities as shown in the passage and how obedient are you to them?

    b. How can you improve in your obedience according to the Lord’s command?

    c. What is the limitation of children’s obedience to their parents when it says “in the Lord”?

    d. What are the blessings attached to obedience in the text?

Note that any excuse for your negligence gives your spiritual accuser a licence to judge and condemn you.

    2. Spiritual family

    a. Spiritual children and fathers are not necessarily biological relations.

    b. How faithful are you to your responsibilities?

    c. Which area do you need to work on in your life in order to please God better and be blessed?

    Prayer points

Confess to God where you might have been negligent and ask for forgiveness

Ask God to remove any evil repercussions that might have followed your disobedience or negligence

Ask for the grace needed to start obeying these commands perfectly henceforth

Pray that our families, natural and spiritual, will not be under the control of the traditions of this world but under the total influence of the word of God
