Why I pioneered Igbinedion University Okada- Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion

    7th September, 2023

Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom and Founder of Igbinedion University (IUO), Okada, Edo, recently shared the motivations behind establishing Nigeria’s first private university in 1999. Speaking at his 89th birthday lecture organized by IUO, Chief Igbinedion’s son represented him and explained that his desire to provide uninterrupted, high-quality education for future generations drove him to establish the university.

Chief Igbinedion expressed satisfaction that his vision has not only materialized over the past 24 years but has also led to the establishment of 148 private universities in Nigeria today. He highlighted that the creation of Igbinedion University aimed to address the limited access to higher education at that time, which hindered human capital development and the nation’s socio-economic progress.

Since its inception, Igbinedion University has achieved remarkable success in teaching, research, capacity building, and innovation. The university adheres to an October-to-June academic calendar, consistently graduating students in November. Notably, IUO embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion, serving as a model for promoting national unity and cohesion. Its graduates have made significant contributions to various fields, both nationally and globally.

Chief Igbinedion reaffirmed his commitment to transforming Nigeria’s educational landscape through the university, emphasizing the need to defend and protect IUO’s reputation as the country’s leading and most prestigious private university.

During the lecture titled “Power of Pioneering,” Mr. Nick Mole, Executive Director of Carbonlogical Ltd. from the United Kingdom, emphasized that pioneering achievements in chosen areas of endeavor require inspiration and collaboration. Dr. Akanimo Odon, an international business strategy development expert and advisor to Africa at Lancaster University, echoed the importance of celebrating Chief Igbinedion’s many firsts, highlighting his positive impact on the world.
